WAIMEA TOWN

Right from the New York Times #1 Bestseller list, 1,000 Places To See Before You Die – A travelers Life list by Patricia Shultz, is the description of beautiful Waimea, our home on Kauai.

I quote:  Waimea, known chiefly as the place where British captain James cook first dropped anchor in Hawaii in 1778, is another strollable town.  Located at the mouth of the 14 mile long Waimea Canyon, it was dubbed the “ Grand Canyon of the Pacific” by Mark Twain. Belvederes look out over the 2 mile wide, 3,000 foot deep gorge, painted in rich ocher, russet, and amber.

Captain Cook's Monument
Located on the roadside in the rural town of Waimea in Hofgaard Park, is the site where British Captain James Cook first landed in Hawaii in 1778. Cook, with his ships the Resolution and Discovery, was the first westerner to discover the islands.

Rich in history, this simple town exemplifies the peace and joy our visitors find in the depths of their soul for Hawaiian culture, a sense of home, and heritage dating back to the start of our history in these islands in the Pacific.  Quaint shops, restaurants, homemade products of jams and jellies, together with modern touches of stores, banks, library, schools, churches and a full service hospital make our town totally self sufficient in taking care of the needs of our kamaainas and visitors alike.

Waimea has rodeos and western activities for our paniolos to enjoy. Christmas is celebrated by closing our town with a light parade enjoyed by thousands each year. In February, Waimea hosts a Town Celebration surrounded with our feeling of family, good food, games, crafters, and wonderful local entertainment. There is no place in Hawaii that creates such a lifestyle that bridges old and new in such a warm and friendly fashion.

Because of the hidden treasures of Waimea, our town was awarded with the Dozen Distinctive Destinations 2006 by the National Trust for Historic Preservation®.

Waimea, our home, captures the dreams people envision of Hawaii.  It is here that dreams become reality.
